How each one works, in one paragraph each
A DNS blocker works at the address-lookup layer. Every time a device asks "where is this website", the DNS service answers - and a family-filter DNS simply refuses to answer for known adult domains. Set it in Android's Private DNS setting and it covers that phone on every network; set it at the router and it covers every device in the house with nothing installed on any of them. Simple, free, and invisible in daily use.
A screen-level blocker app works at the display layer. It responds to what is actually rendered on the screen, in any app, and acts the moment explicit content appears. Qlean works this way: the app is closed or the page covered before the moment of engagement begins, using judgment rather than word lists, so recovery articles and health pages stay readable. It requires one accessibility permission on the device it protects, and it protects only that device.

Read the columns and the conclusion writes itself: each one's blind spots are the other one's strengths. Treating them as rivals means choosing which half of the problem to leave open.
If you are protecting yourself, on your own phone
The pattern we hear constantly, and lived ourselves: a DNS filter or site-list blocker goes on, dedicated sites stop loading, and within a week the habit has quietly rerouted through a social feed or an image search that no domain list can touch. Feeds and search are where modern exposure predominantly happens on a phone, and they are structurally invisible to address-based filtering - the same domain serves the harmless and the explicit. If this is your situation, the screen-level layer is the one doing the decisive work, and the DNS layer is the cheap insurance underneath it.
If you are protecting a household network
Then DNS is genuinely the right first tool, and we say that as makers of the other kind: one router setting covers every laptop, TV and guest device with zero installs. Its limits on feeds and apps still apply on every device, but as a base layer for shared space it is unbeatable value at a price of zero. (One boundary note: setting up filtering on someone else's personal device without their knowledge is a different matter entirely - Qlean is a self-control tool and takes no part in that. For protecting children, Google's Family Link is the honest starting point.)
