Start with your reason for leaving
BlockerX's design commitments, per its own Play listing, are: an accountability-partner system (including notifying your partner if you uninstall), a large community, list-and-VPN-based blocking, breadth beyond adult content (social media, gaming, gambling, dating apps), ads on the free tier, and a subscription for key features. Every common reason for switching maps to one of those commitments, and each reason points to a different alternative:

A family-filter DNS - the free base layer either way
Whatever you choose above, Android's Private DNS setting pointed at a family-filter provider blocks known adult domains in every app, free, on any network. It cannot see content inside apps - that structural gap is why screen-level tools exist - but as a base layer under any other choice it costs nothing and catches plenty.
